Foundations installed within an existing building for a high-profile project, sheet piles installed very close to an existing wall and managing multiple techniques while maintaining clear boundaries for live public operation were just a few highlights from this project.

The project

Marriot is building it’s first hotel in 20 years in Melbourne’s Docklands location. It will comprise of a 17 storey, five-star hotel and include over 100 apartments, a cinema complex and a revamped shopping centre.

The challenge

The principal challenge was that a section of the foundations needed to be built within the footprint of an existing building. Additionally, we had to provide multiple techniques, CFA piles for the main foundations, precast piles in a constrained area and sheet piles installed as close as possible to an existing wall for the core excavation and car stacker pits. Throughout our works the nearby shopping centre remained open requiring work boundaries to be clear and safe for public access.

The solution

Our team used a virtual computer-aided design through which we were able to develop the optimal solution and demonstrate that the rig would have enough space. From our extensive range of plant, we were able to allocate the most suitable sized rigs for each application. Our expert site crews developed a solution that enabled us to drive sheet piles very close to the wall; whilst maintaining very clear boundaries and ensuring safe public access to the shopping centre.
